The majority of companies who buy/use chemicals will understand their legislative requirements with regards to obtaining and retaining a safety data sheet for those products.  However, large quantities of companies do not understand what they should do with the information provided in the SDSs they have sourced.   All data provided is created with the aim to ensure the protection of all users of chemicals.    

Section 2 of your product SDS aims to provide you with an overview of the particular hazards associated with your chemical and the information required on the product label. 

Chemdoc has put together a series of articles outlining the importance of the information provided in the SDS sections and how we can help to make your job a little easier.   This first article relates to one of the most important parts of the SDS – Section 2.    

While the CLP Regulations in Europe subdivide this section into further subsections, this is not the case with other regulations such as the OSHA HCS in the USA or WHMIS in Canada.  Ultimately the information is generally the same throughout all jurisdictions with the exception of one of two minor elements.

  1. The hazard classification of the product.
  2. Signal word.
  3. Pictograms.
  4. Hazard statement(s).
  5. Precautionary statements.
  6. Description of any hazards not otherwise classified (HCS & WHMIS).
  7. Additional requirements as outlined by specific legislation. 

The hazard classification is usually the first item you will find in Section 2.  This information is essential when assessing the risk to the workers and the environment. 

The CLP Regulation, HCS and WHMIS introduce a number of different classification hazards under the groups; physical, health and environmental (non-mandatory for HCS & WHMIS).  These hazards can range from acute toxicity to environmental hazards to skin sensitisation. 

Although companies have some leeway with regards to how they display this information, they cannot exclude the information from their SDSs altogether.
